OET requirements for the GMC (UK doctors): what score you need

The GMC regulates doctors in the UK and grants the registration and licence to practise that international medical graduates need. It accepts OET Medicine as evidence of English language competence.

OET is an accepted route alongside others; the required grade and the surrounding rules are the GMC's to set and are reviewed over time, so confirm the current position before you plan around it.

Regulator: General Medical Council
Country: United Kingdom
Covers: Doctors

THE OET REQUIREMENT

The GMC has commonly required grade B, a numeric score of 350, in each of the four subtests on OET Medicine. Check the current minimum on the GMC website, since the figure and the conditions attached to it can be updated.

WORTH CONFIRMING

The GMC has commonly allowed candidates to combine results from two sittings taken within a defined window, provided each subtest meets a stated minimum. The exact window and minimums are set by the GMC and change, so confirm them directly rather than assume the rule as described here still holds.

PREPARE FOR THE GRADE

Whatever the exact figure, Writing and Speaking are the subtests most candidates lose marks on. WardPass marks practice letters and role plays in seconds against the published OET criteria, and tracks a readiness estimate per subtest toward the 350 line, so you know whether you are on track before you sit the test.
